Abstract

Challenge-based learning is a new teaching model that incorporates the best aspects of problem-based learning, project-based learning, and contextual teaching and learning while focusing on current real world problems (Johnson, Smith, Smythe, & Varon, 2009). In particular, when delivered as a mobile digital learning experience using an application platform developed at Curtin University, such challenges can integrate 21st century tools, require collaboration and assist students in managing their time and work schedule, while effectively scaling to large numbers of students. The Challenge research and development process has led to new approaches and ideas about educational measurement that take account of patterns in time, high resolution paths of action, and clusters of virtual performance artifacts. This talk will briefly describe the context, methods and key explanatory constructs used to make claims based on engagements in online challenge-based learning.

About the speaker

Associate Professor David Gibson is Director of Learning Engagement at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He works as a thought leader, educational researcher, learning scientist, professor and innovator. With funding from the Australian Office of Learning and Teaching, National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, MacArthur Foundation, EDUCAUSE, and others, Gibson’s research focuses on games and simulations in education, learning analytics, complex systems analysis and the use of technology to personalize learning via cognitive modeling, design and implementation. He has published 8 books, 12 chapters, and over 50 articles and presentations on these topics. He is the creator of simSchool, a classroom flight simulator for preparing educators, and eFolio an online performance-based assessment system and provides vision and sponsorship for Curtin University’s Challenge, a mobile, game-based learning platform.
